“대학 스타트업 성공 반열에 오를 것”
코로나 19 팬데믹은 인류에게 다방면으로 영향을 미쳤다. 그중 ‘비대면’은 코로나 19 팬데믹을 꿰뚫는 가장 큰 키워드로, 4차산업혁명과 맞물리며 메타버스 기술의 비약적인 발전을 가져왔다. 국내외 굴지 IT 기업들의 경쟁이 가속화되고 있는 가운데, 국내 대학 스타트업, ㈜엔에스랩이 글로벌 경쟁에 출사표를 던지며, 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 스타트업을 이끄는 김동성 교수는 회사 경영이라는 새로운 도전을 준비하며, 설레는 마음으로 성공에 대한 강한 확신을 밝혔다.
㈜엔에스랩 창업
실시간 SW 및 제어 통신망 분야에서 인정받는 연구자인 김동성 교수는 금오공대 네트워크 기반 시스템 연구실(NSL)을 이끌고 있다. 그는 16년간 함정 또는 잠수함에 사용되는 핵심 SW 기술을 개발하며 국내 방산 기술 국산화에 큰 기여를 했다. 물론 현재까지 120여 명의 석·박사 인력을 배출하며 관련 분야 고급 인력 양성에 이바지한 바도 크다. 그의 연구 인생의 획을 그을 일이 또 하나 일어났다. 바로 금오공대 네트워크 기반 시스템 연구실을 모체로 한 스타트업 기업인 ㈜엔에스랩의 창업이다. “20년이 넘는 시간 동안 교직 생활을 하며 쌓아온 연구 및 기술개발을 꽃피울 수 있는 회사를 설립하는 것이 목표였습니다. 석·박사 학생연구원들이 연구를 고도화할 수 있는 환경을 장려하고, 이를 통해 얻은 연구 성과를 회사에서 수익화해서, 회사를 성장시키고, 연구원들을 회사에서 좋은 조건으로 채용하는 선순환 구조를 가지는 모델을 제시하고 싶었습니다” 그가 스타트업을 창업할 수 있었던 원동력은 그동안의 연구 인프라와 그가 배출한 연구인력 덕분이었다. 그동안 배출한 120여 명의 세계 각국의 연구인력들은 그의 스타트업 창업을 위한 기술력과 네트워크를 갖추는 데 큰 도움이 됐다.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on humanity in many ways. As global IT giants intensify their competition, a domestic university startup, NSLab Inc., has entered the fray, garnering significant attention. Professor Dong-Sung Kim, leading this startup, expressed his excitement and firm confidence in achieving success as he embarks on this new challenge of company management.
Professor Dong-Sung Kim, a recognized researcher in the fields of real-time software and control communication networks, leads the Network-based Systems Laboratory (NSL) at Kumoh National Institute of Technology. Over 16 years, he has made substantial contributions to the localization of core software technologies used in naval ships and submarines, significantly advancing Korea’s defense technology. Additionally, he has played a pivotal role in fostering advanced talent in related fields by supervising over 120 master’s and doctoral graduates.
His career marked a new milestone with the founding of NSLab, a startup rooted in the Network-based Systems Laboratory at Kumoh National Institute of Technology.
“My goal was to establish a company that could bring to fruition the research and technological development accumulated over more than 20 years in academia. I aimed to create an environment where graduate researchers could enhance their work, monetize their achievements through the company, and establish a virtuous cycle where the company grows while providing excellent opportunities for the researchers.”
The driving forces behind his startup’s launch were the robust research infrastructure he built over the years and the network of talented researchers he mentored. The 120 researchers he has guided, now contributing to various fields worldwide, played a crucial role in equipping NSLab with the necessary technology and connections for its foundation.
