국립금오공대 창업원(원장 신승혁)이 경북 지역 기업들의 지원에 힘을 다하며 지역내 창업 거점으로 떠오르고 있다.
이 창업원은 현재 교내 200여명 교수진을 중심으로 42개 입주기업의 기술 개발을 지원하고 있다. 창업보육센터, 창업교육센터 뿐 아니라 강소연구개발특구, 기술지주회사 등에서 창업기업 발굴부터 육성, 투자, 수출까지 전 주기적 창업 지원을 통한 ‘글로컬 스타트업 기업’ 육성에 힘쓰고 있다.
블록체인 및 메타버스 기반 기술 연구 및 개발을 진행하는 엔에스랩(대표 김동성)의 경우 금오공대 ICT융합특성화연구센터 연구를 기반으로 지난 2022년 설립해 2023년 5월 연구소기업 등록, 8월 창업보육센터에 입주하며 사업을 확장했고, 10월에는 블록체인 기술로 첨단기술기업에 선정됐다. 2022년 설립 이후 블록체인 기반 오프라인 모바일 전자지갑인 ‘퓨어월렛(PureWallet)’ 판매를 통해 100만달러 수출을 달성했고, 2023년 퓨어월렛의 강화를 위한 블록체인 알고리즘 개발 및 서비스 개발을 통해 200만달러 수출 계약을 달성했다.
산업용 로봇 및 임베디드 제어기 개발 기업 디버스도 금오공대를 통해 성장하고 있는 스타트업이다. 이 회사의 홍준호 대표는 금오공대 08학번으로 2017년부터 동 대학원 석·박사과정과 회사생활을 병행하며 웨어러블용 임베디드 제어기 설계 실무경험을 쌓았다.
기계시스템공학과 지도교수와 험지 극복을 위한 로봇 기구 설계 및 제어 관련 연구를 진행하며 좁은 야외 험지의 산업현장에서 도움이 될 로봇의 필요성을 느껴 2022년 6월 금오공대 강소특구육성사업을 통해 창업했고, 올해 창업보육센터에 입주했다.
연구 개발 과정에서 완전 자동화가 불가능한 장애물이 많은 야외 험지의 특징에 맞춰 완벽히 사람만을 추종하며 이동하는 솔루션을 개발했고, 이를 기반으로 이송로봇 시제품을 만들었다. 현재는 지도교수와 협업을 통해 야외 험지 주행용 로봇 제어기 개발을 진행하고 있다. 금오공대 창업보육센터와 창업교육센터의 글로컬마케터 공동지원으로 베트남 전시회에 참가해 첫 수출 실적을 기록하기도 했다.
창업교육센터는 4단계 맞춤형 창업지원 체계, 창업친화적 학사제도, 창업연계전공을 운영하고 있다. 매년 학생창업자 10명, 창업휴학생 15명, 창업소양강좌 2200명, 실전창업강좌 276명, 창업동아리 33개팀(150명), 글로컬 마케터 4명, 3CS(기업애로기술발굴 및 해결)에 10개 기업과 연계해 교수 10명과 학생 35명이 운영 중이다.
또한 금오공대는 2023년 한국창업보육협회와 매일경제신문사가 공동주관한 ‘매경대학창업지수’ 평가에서 일반대 부문 종합 7위를 기록했다. 2021년 16위, 2022년 8위에서 올해 7위로 2년 연속 톱 10 진입은 물론, 매년 순위가 오르며 창업에 강한 대학으로 자리 매김하고 있다.
국립금오공대 창업원 관계자는 “지역산업을 주도하는 혁신적인 스타트업 육성 뿐 아니라 해외 창업지원기관과 협업을 통해 입주기업들이 글로벌 시장에 성공적으로 진출할 수 있도록 수출 경쟁력 강화에 집중 지원할 계획이며, 구미를 첨단기술 창업 메카로 도약시킬 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Gumi--(Newswire)--The National Institute of Technology, Gumi (NITG) Entrepreneurship Center (Director Shin Seung-hyuk) is emerging as a key hub for startup support in the Gyeongbuk region, dedicating efforts to assist local companies.
The center is currently supporting the technology development of 42 resident companies, led by over 200 faculty members from the university. The center provides full-cycle startup support, from discovery and nurturing of startups to investment and export, through various programs such as the Startup Incubation Center, Startup Education Center, Small and Medium-sized Research & Development Special Zones, and Technology Holding Companies. The goal is to foster "glocal startups," which are both globally competitive and locally rooted.
NSLab Inc. (CEO Dong-Seong Kim), a company engaged in blockchain and metaverse-based technology research and development, was established in 2022 based on research from the university’s ICT Convergence Research Center. In May 2023, NSLab registered as a research-based company, expanded its business by moving into the Startup Incubation Center in August, and in October was recognized as an advanced technology company based on its blockchain expertise. Since its establishment in 2022, the company achieved $1 million in exports through the sales of its blockchain-based offline mobile wallet, "PureWallet." In 2023, NSLab reached a $2 million export contract by developing blockchain algorithms and enhancing the PureWallet service.
Diverse, a company specializing in industrial robots and embedded controllers, is another startup growing through NITG's support. CEO Hong Jun-ho, an alumnus of NITG's Class of 2008, gained practical experience in wearable embedded controller design while pursuing his master's and doctoral degrees at NITG. In collaboration with his academic advisor, he conducted research on robotic mechanisms and control systems for overcoming rugged outdoor terrains. In June 2022, he launched the company through NITG's Small and Medium-sized Special Zone Business Support Program, and in 2023, the company moved into the Startup Incubation Center.
The company developed a solution tailored to outdoor terrains, where full automation is challenging. This solution perfectly follows humans during movement, and based on this, a prototype of a transport robot was created. Diverse is now collaborating with its academic advisor to develop a controller for outdoor terrain robots. With the support of the Global Marketer program from the Startup Incubation and Education Centers, Diverse participated in a Vietnamese exhibition and achieved its first export.
The Startup Education Center operates a four-phase customized support system for startups, startup-friendly academic systems, and startup-related majors. Every year, the center supports 10 student entrepreneurs, 15 students on startup leave, 2,200 students taking entrepreneurship courses, 276 students in practical entrepreneurship courses, 33 startup clubs (150 members), 4 Global Marketers, and 10 companies connected through 3CS (Corporate Problem-solving and Technology Discovery), supported by 10 professors and 35 students.
In addition, NITG ranked 7th in the "Maekyung University Startup Index," a joint evaluation by the Korea Business Incubation Association and Maeil Business Newspaper, in 2023. This is an improvement from 16th place in 2021 and 8th place in 2022, marking NITG as a leading university for entrepreneurship with a consistent rise in rankings.
A representative from the NITG Entrepreneurship Center stated, "In addition to nurturing innovative startups that lead the regional industry, we plan to focus on strengthening the export competitiveness of resident companies through collaboration with overseas startup support organizations, helping them successfully enter the global market. We will do our best to elevate Gumi as a hub for advanced technology startups."
